Women’s Rights

Agatha will fight for women’s rights to reproductive and abortion rights, free access to contraception and reproductive health services, equal pay, paid parental leave and ending violence against women. It is time we live in a gender equal and just society.

We are living in a time where women’s rights are under attack. Although 96% of Americans believe the Equal Rights Amendment that would guarantee equal rights to all citizens without regard to sex has passed, it has not.1 For every dollar earned by men, white women earn 78 cents, black women 64 cents and Latinas 54 cents.2

Trump overturned Title X which now limits funding to women’s reproductive, educational, and counseling services related to family planning and contraception to 4 million clients yearly.3 The President, who has been accused4 of sexually harassing, groping, and raping women, has undone5 the Fair Pay and Safe Workplaces Executive Order. This allows government contracting with companies with sexual assault violations.6 Not only in the United States, Trump also expanded the Global Gag Rule that forbids foreign NGOs funded by the U.S. to speak about abortion. This is estimated to kill millions of women and girls worldwide.

How does this impact CA-12?

The UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), an international treaty focusing on the rights of women, has been ratified by 186 of 193 UN member states.7 The United States has not, along with Somalia, Sudan, Iran and others.8 San Francisco was the first city in the world to adopt an ordinance reflecting the principles of CEDAW in 1988.9

Pelosi’s Status Quo

Although Nancy Pelosi, the incumbent, has been a strong advocate for women’s rights, she has repeatedly singled out freshman congresswomen of color.10

Agatha’s Agenda

Agatha believes we should make it illegal to pay women less than men.

Fight to pass the Equal Rights Amendment to guarantee equal legal rights for all American citizens regardless of their sex.

Agatha believes women should have free access to reproductive health education, and counseling services related to family planning.

Agatha is pro-choice, and will work to legalize abortion federally.

Agatha will work to end violence against women in all its forms.

In support of Agatha’s plan (temp, optional)

Milton Friedman (Nobel-winning economist), 1980: “We should replace the ragbag of specific welfare programs with a single comprehensive program of income supplements in cash — a negative income tax . . . which would do more efficiently and humanely what our present welfare system does so inefficiently and inhumanely.”

Bernie Sanders, May 2014: “In my view, every American is entitled to at least a minimum standard of living . . .There are different ways to get to that goal, but that’s the goal that we should strive to reach.”

Stephen Hawking, July 2015: “Everyone can enjoy a life of luxurious leisure if the machine-produced wealth is shared, or most people can end up miserably poor if the machine-owners successfully lobby against wealth redistribution. So far, the trend seems to be toward the second option, with technology driving ever-increasing inequality.”
